Apple Patent Outlines Future AR Smart Glasses With Triple Display Technology

Apple patent Smart Glasses

A recent blog post by Patently Apple announced that Apple has received approval for a new patent focused on computer-generated reality (CGR) environments, which outlines an innovative design for upcoming smart glasses.

The post outlines an innovative design that features a triple display system, including a primary display, a secondary display, and an LED indicator system. The main display is designed to cover the user’s entire field of vision and provide a highest resolution for core content presentation.

Secondary Display Features

The secondary display is physically and electronically linked to the primary display but operates at a lower resolution. Its primary function is to show initial aspects of virtual objects, such as preview interfaces during app launches. This strategic design helps conserve battery life, thereby extending the device's usage time.

Furthermore, the patent highlights the multifunctional aspects of the secondary display. It can operate as a timer or stopwatch.

The smart glasses are expected to support various applications, including messaging, email, calls, calendars, health monitoring, and ride-sharing services. Users can easily transition application content from the secondary to the primary display using touch sensors or Siri voice commands.

Dynamic LED Indicator System

A key feature of the smart glasses is the innovative LED indicator system that runs along the inner frame. This system serves as a dynamic guide; for instance, when a user is trying to find lost keys equipped with an AirTag, the LED can highlight the area where the keys are located.

In situations involving ride-sharing, the LED system can visually outline the arriving vehicle, helping users easily spot their Uber through flashing or enlarged indicators.

The patent also hints that the smart glasses will include facial recognition capabilitiesThis feature would allow the smart glasses to adjust application displays based on the user’s posture.

For example, during a FaceTime call, the LED could indicate the emotional state of the other participant by changing colors according to their expressions. However, this functionality is still awaiting verification in practical applications.

Apple's newest patent suggests a future in which smart glasses easily integrate advanced technology with daily convenience, possibly transforming the way users engage with the digital world.
