Meta Unveils Major Update for Ray-Ban Smart Glasses: Enhanced AI, Threads Integration, and Neural Handwriting
On July 28, Meta announced the rollout of a significant new software update for its Ray-Ban Display smart glasses in the U.S. market. This update focuses on upgrading the Meta AI capabilities and introduces new features including support for the Threads app, Neural Handwriting interaction, and several enhancements for Instagram, aiming to elevate the AI assistant and social experience.

A key part of this update is the upgrade of Meta AI to a new version based on the Muse Spark model. Meta states this new model will improve the quality of AI responses, its visual understanding, and contextual awareness, enabling the smart glasses to provide more accurate and natural real-time assistance. For example, a user can ask, "Hey Meta, is this food high in dietary fiber?" and the AI will use the camera to identify the object and answer. Users can also inquire about nearby locations, such as asking, "Which nearby coffee shop has good Wi-Fi?" and the system will provide recommendations based on the current location. Furthermore, Meta AI can offer instant help with cooking, chores, or planning weekend trips, and can display real-time information like weather, stocks, and calendars directly on the lenses, reducing reliance on a smartphone.
This update also brings Threads to the Ray-Ban Display smart glasses. Users can now browse their Threads feed, view photos and videos, interact with posts, and share content to messaging apps, all through voice commands. This integration further frees up users' hands while they engage with social media content.
In a parallel development, Meta is launching a beta feature called Neural Handwriting for users in the U.S. and Canada. This function requires the use of the Meta Neural Band. Instead of saying "Hey Meta," users can activate Meta AI by double-tapping their thumb. After entering handwriting mode in the AI Home, they can write on any flat surface with their finger to ask questions, retrieve information, play music, send messages, and initiate navigation.
The Instagram functionality has also received a significant upgrade. Users can now post first-person content captured with their Meta Ray-Ban Display directly to Instagram Instants using voice commands like "Hey Meta, share an instant" or "Hey Meta, post an instant." Additionally, Instagram Reels now supports voice search and viewing comments, and users can share Reels with all their contacts. It's also possible to search for specific content by voice, for instance, by saying, "Hey Meta, show me reels of the coolest features on Meta Ray-Ban Display."
Meta has confirmed that the update began rolling out to U.S. users in batches starting today. For those who haven't received it yet, they are advised to check again later. In addition to these new features, the Ray-Ban Display already supports walking navigation across the U.S., real-time translation in 20 languages, and in-lens Spotify browsing. Meta plans to continue expanding the AI capabilities and user experience of the smart glasses through ongoing software updates.
