Xiaomi's Smartphones Users Can Adjust CPU and GPU Frequencies

Currently, PC and laptop users have relative freedom to fine-tune their hardware, but the process is much more complicated on smartphones. However, Xiaomi may change that with Android 16. New information, unearthed by Kacper Skrzypek, suggests that users may be able to overclock their phone's CPU and GPU.

Developer Kacper Skrzypek dug into the MIUI firmware and discovered relevant code snippets, showing that Xiaomi is developing a “Chip performance dashboard”.

Users can use this feature to adjust the clock frequency of the CPU and GPU, and also support voltage adjustment within a safe range. The code mentions the phrases “big, medium, small and GPU cores”, indicating that users can control the performance of each group of cores in detail.

Adjusting the frequency and voltage requires a device reboot to take effect. MIUI has built-in protection mechanisms, including “frequency verification” and “startup check”. If the parameter adjustment leads to system instability, the phone will automatically restore to default settings. For example, the code reads:

“Default preferences were restored to ensure normal use,” to ensure that even if the wrong operation is performed, the user’s device will not be completely damaged.

Xiaomi has not yet revealed which models will support this feature, but it is speculated that it will be applied first to flagship models such as the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Ultra. For performance enthusiasts, this could be a new way to reduce power consumption or enhance the gaming experience.
