Hands-On with the Honor Robot Phone: A Glimpse into the Future with a 3-Axis Gimbal and Embodied AI

At this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC), Honor unveiled a fascinating new concept device, the Robot Phone. The most striking feature of this new device is its large, motorized, flipping camera, which the company touts as a new form of embodied AI terminal.

In terms of appearance, the Robot Phone sports a sleek silver-gray body with brushed metal frames. It largely resembles a conventional smartphone, with the major exception of the 3-axis gimbal camera mounted on top, reminiscent of a DJI Osmo Pocket. A distinctive "α" logo on the back further highlights the device's unique nature.

Functionally, the 3-axis gimbal camera is equipped with a 200-megapixel sensor and can flip forwards and backwards, allowing users to easily capture themselves or their surroundings. Enhanced by a technology partnership with imaging giant ARRI, it supports AI object tracking, AI video editing, and intelligent shooting. These features enable real-time sensing and compensation to ensure exceptionally stable video footage.

The camera's user interface has been completely optimized for the gimbal system. While the initial layout might bring the LG Wing to mind, it offers a unique experience tailored for videography. Users can select from a preset library of cinematic movements, like rotational pans, to capture professional-quality shots with a single tap. A dropdown menu also provides easy access to adjustments for filters, HDR, and exposure compensation.

Furthermore, Honor demonstrated an AI agent mode on the device. In this mode, the phone transforms into a conversational robot that you can chat with via voice. An animated avatar on the screen even reacts to the user's speech, adding an engaging and interactive element to the experience.
