Honor Magic V6 Review: Durability Perfected, Screen Redefined

The foldable phone market, now in its seventh year, has seen significant evolution. While early pioneers like Samsung and Huawei laid the groundwork, Honor has emerged as a key player driving change. In 2023, the Honor Magic V2 initiated the trend of ultra-thin foldables, breaking the 1cm thickness barrier. This race for slimness continued, but with the new Honor Magic V6, the company seems to be looking beyond just thinness and weight, focusing on aspects that truly matter to users.

A Screen That Dares You to Ditch the Protector

Honor has put its new screen front and center. Unfolding or folding the device triggers a dynamic HDR wallpaper, immediately showcasing the display's quality with stunning brightness and contrast. Dubbed the "King Kong Diamond Screen," it's designed to be both tough and bright, and it's used for both the inner and outer displays. The Magic V6 features a 6.52-inch outer screen and a 7.95-inch inner screen, with peak brightness levels of 6000 nits and 5000 nits, respectively. Both support a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 4320Hz PWM dimming.

The inner screen has been upgraded from CPI to UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass), offering a superior touch feel and visual clarity. To address UTG's traditional fragility, Honor reinforced it with a 5600-layer silicon nitride process, resulting in a surface that feels more robust and less prone to marks from fingernails. The outer screen is now a flat panel, and Honor claims it's so durable that it doesn't need a screen protector. This is thanks to the King Kong Diamond Screen's integrated AR anti-reflection layer, which significantly improves visibility in bright conditions. While the crease is shallower than its predecessor, it is still visible from certain angles. As for durability, the oleophobic coating does wear over time, leading to more fingerprints, which raises the question of whether Honor will offer coating reapplication services in the future.

When USB-C Becomes the Barrier to Thinness

The Honor Magic V6 pushes the boundaries of thin and light design even further. The model we tested is just 8.75mm thick when folded and a mere 4mm when unfolded. At 219g, it's surprisingly lighter than many flagship candy bar phones like the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This makes it incredibly portable, often feeling like a regular phone in your pocket. The design largely follows its predecessor, though the large camera deco on the back prevents it from lying flat without the included case, which cleverly features a built-in kickstand.

Despite its slim profile, Honor has packed in a massive 6850mAh Qinghai Lake battery, supporting 80W wired and 66W wireless charging. Battery life is impressive: a one-hour 4K movie stream consumed only 4%, while an hour of Genshin Impact used just 15%. Powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 series flagship chip, the phone handles demanding games like Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves smoothly, with only minor frame drops during transitions. The combination of extreme thinness, a huge battery, and flagship performance is a remarkable engineering feat, limited only by the physical size of components like the USB-C port.

King Kong Imaging: More Than Meets the Eye

While many foldables compromise on cameras to achieve a thin design, the Magic V6 retains a powerful setup: a 50MP main camera, a 64MP periscope telephoto lens, and a 50MP ultra-wide lens. The telephoto camera is now upgraded with CIPA 6.5-level stabilization, enhancing its performance for snapshots and night photography. In good lighting, the 64MP periscope telephoto focuses quickly and accurately, capturing sharp subjects even in busy scenes. It also retains its telephoto-macro capabilities, allowing for creative close-up shots.

The main camera delivers improved detail, likely due to enhanced algorithms. The color science, especially in the 'Vivid' mode, offers a natural and pleasing look that is true to life without being overly saturated. A new 'AI Color Picking' feature allows you to create a custom filter based on the color palette of any image, though it currently doesn't save these filters for future use. Overall, the imaging capabilities of the Magic V6 are on par with Honor's flagship Magic8 series, offering a reliable and high-quality photography experience.

AI-Powered Big Screen = Productivity?

Foldable phones have long been marketed as productivity devices. The Honor Magic V6 enhances this with thoughtful software features that better utilize its large screen. A new 'three-way split-screen' function allows you to run three apps simultaneously, which is perfect for multitasking like watching a live conference while taking notes and browsing social media. The phone provides smart recommendations for app combinations and remembers your last setup for quick access. It's also the first to support dual split-screen mode in stock trading apps, allowing for direct comparison of two stocks. The YOYO AI assistant has also been improved, with features like optimizing text captured from whiteboards and even allowing direct editing of photographed Excel documents.

Conclusion: Catching Up and Leading the Pack

Foldable phones have often lagged behind their candy bar counterparts in key areas like battery life, screen technology, and durability. The Honor Magic V6 smartly addresses these shortcomings. With a battery capacity that surpasses many flagships, a cutting-edge AR screen, and a groundbreaking IP68/69 dust and water resistance rating, it closes the gap. The Magic V6 proves that the future of foldables isn't just about being radical but about refining the core experience. Its upgrades are practical, focusing on delivering a reliable, durable, and powerful device that doesn't compromise.

Pros:

1. Excellent viewing experience on both inner and outer screens
2. IP68/69 dust and water resistance
3. Seamless file transfer across iOS, Android, and HarmonyOS ecosystems

Cons:

1. Prominent camera bump prevents it from lying flat
2. Both screens are prone to collecting fingerprints
