MediaTek Dimension 9300 Could Compete With Snapdragon 8 Gen 3
It is reported, MediaTek is preparing a flagship mobile chipset that could compete with Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. According to industry rumors, MediaTek's next SoC, called the Dimensity 9300, will have four high-performance Cortex-X4 cores, a feature that could make it very attractive to smartphone makers.
So far, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has been the most talked about SoC, but the Dimension 9300 could be a game changer. The diversity of cores will allow it to perform many tasks more efficiently and faster than other SoCs.
However, according to Digital Chat Station on Weibo, thermals could be a problem for MediaTek. While the Dimension 9300 is manufactured on TSMC's improved N4P node, it is still a 4nm process that may struggle to control the temperatures of the four Cortex-X4 cores. This "4+4" configuration , which does not include efficient cores such as the Cortex-A5XX named "hayes" , could in fact put a strain on the SoC's ability to cool, especially in different climates and humidity levels.
Being manufactured on TSMC's improved N4P node, the company may be able to address the issue of controlled room temperatures. However, the risk of overheating would be very high in a smartphone used outdoors. Furthermore, the absence of efficient cores could affect the computational performance of the smartphone.
Of course, a lot depends on how MediaTek's SoC will be used and tested. While it may beat the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 on paper, the real-world results could be very different. MediaTek should therefore evaluate the possibility of testing a version of the SoC with a lower number of Cortex-X4 cores, in order to obtain a more balanced and effective CPU configuration.
In any case, the Dimensity 9300 represents a very interesting novelty for the chipset market for top-of-the-range smartphones and could give the main manufacturers in the sector a hard time. The competition between Qualcomm, MediaTek and other SoC manufacturers could lead to further evolution of mobile devices and offer consumers new possibilities and new usage experiences.
