Relay Q Wants to Make Voice the New Shortcut for Everyday Computing

Relay is bringing Relay Q to IFA 2026 in Berlin, introducing a purpose-built push-to-talk voice interface designed for people who want to capture ideas, communicate faster, and move through digital tasks without always returning to the keyboard.

At first glance, Relay Q looks like another AI voice recorder. But Relay is positioning it differently. Instead of simply converting speech into text, the device is built to work from the original spoken audio, nearby device context, and user preferences to better understand what someone means.

That distinction matters. Traditional dictation is useful when you already know exactly what you want to say. Relay Q is trying to help with the messier part: turning rough spoken thoughts into cleaner messages, notes, instructions, and next steps.

A Hardware Button for AI Voice

Relay Q is built around a simple push-to-talk interaction. Users press and hold to capture voice, then double-press to send. That makes the device feel more intentional than always-listening AI wearables, while still being faster than opening an app and typing.

The hardware supports both handheld and wearable use. Relay says the device uses a close-range microphone for discreet voice capture, making it more suitable for quick thoughts, short commands, and private notes than a phone microphone sitting across the room.

Relay’s product page also lists a dual-mic system, a magnetic charging dock, and optional remote-style workflows. The idea is to make voice input available where typing feels slow or awkward: at a desk, while moving between tasks, or during moments when an idea would normally disappear before it gets written down.

Beyond Speech-to-Text

The more interesting part of Relay Q is the software layer.

Relay says the system uses context-aware voice intelligence, meaning it does not treat speech as isolated text. Instead, it can use the original audio, relevant device context, and personal preferences to shape the output.

In practical terms, that could mean turning a rough voice note into a polished message, extracting an action item, or formatting an idea for the app or workflow where it needs to go. Relay calls these connected actions Relay Skills, which are designed to link voice input with apps, information, and digital workflows.

That makes Relay Q less like a standalone recorder and more like a voice shortcut for everyday computing.

Built Around User Control

Privacy is one of the biggest questions for any AI voice device, and Relay seems aware of that. The company says Relay Q only captures audio when explicitly activated. It also says personal context and long-term memory are stored locally on the user’s device.

That is an important positioning choice. Many AI wearables struggle with the perception that they are always listening. Relay Q’s push-to-talk model gives users a clearer boundary: the device is meant to capture when you ask it to, not quietly record everything around you.

Of course, the real test will be how clearly that works in daily use. Users will still want to know how audio is processed, what gets stored, what goes to the cloud, and how easily they can delete personal data.

Price and Availability

Relay Q is currently available for pre-order through Relay’s official website. The company lists an Early Supporter Bundle at $150, which includes the Relay Q hardware and 12 months of Relay Unlimited. Relay also lists Relay Unlimited as a $15/month subscription.

According to Relay’s product page, the device is expected to ship in January 2027.

Relay Q is part of a growing shift toward AI hardware that does not try to replace the phone. Instead, it focuses on one specific behavior: using voice as a faster input method for AI-powered work.

That focus makes sense. People already talk faster than they type, but most voice tools still feel like awkward dictation boxes. Relay Q’s bet is that dedicated hardware, tactile controls, and context-aware software can make voice feel more useful for real digital workflows.

The open question is whether people want another device for something their phone can technically do. Relay Q will need to prove that its push-to-talk hardware, local memory approach, and Relay Skills make voice input meaningfully smoother than using a phone, earbuds, or a keyboard shortcut.

If it works, Relay Q could become a practical bridge between spoken thoughts and digital action.
