Fairphone Unveils Upgraded Fairbuds XL (2025): Better Sound, More Comfort, Same Price

Fairphone has officially launched the 2025 edition of its Fairbuds XL over-ear headphones, introducing several key upgrades while staying true to its core principles of modularity and sustainability. Announced on December 9th, the new model features enhanced audio drivers and improved materials, all while maintaining the original's accessible price point of $229.

One of the most notable changes in the Fairbuds XL (2025) is a focus on user comfort. Fairphone has moved away from the PU leather used in the 2023 version's headband and ear pads. Instead, the new model utilizes a breathable mesh fabric for the headband and a bird's-eye mesh for the ear pads, designed to enhance comfort and breathability during long listening sessions.

Under the hood, the audio experience has been refined with upgraded drivers that deliver a more balanced stereo performance. The headphones continue to support high-quality wireless audio with Qualcomm's aptX HD 24-bit codec. Essential features like Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and a Transparency Mode are also included, ensuring a versatile listening experience in any environment, with a wireless battery life of up to 30 hours.

Fairphone has also introduced several practical improvements. The headphones now feature a 30-minute auto power-off function to conserve battery, and the product warranty has been extended to three years, reflecting confidence in its durability. This commitment to longevity is a cornerstone of the Fairphone brand.

Reinforcing its commitment to sustainability, the Fairbuds XL (2025) are built with an increased focus on recycled materials. The driver magnets use 100% recycled rare earth elements, the aluminum components are 92% recycled, and the solder paste is made from 100% recycled tin. Furthermore, the entire assembly process is powered by renewable energy sources.

In a move that benefits existing customers, Fairphone has also announced that it will begin offering upgrade components for the original Fairbuds XL starting from the end of the first quarter of 2026. This allows owners of the 2023 model to benefit from the new improvements, further extending the life of their products and underscoring the company's dedication to repairability and reducing e-waste.
