Google Pixel tablet: finally a worthy challenger for the Ipad?

Google Pixel Tablet (Trusted reviews)

In the vast, murky sea of tablets, where devices are perpetually stuck in an existential crisis between smartphones and laptops, Google has decided to stir the pot with its latest brainchild, the Pixel Tablet.

With a price tag of £599, this device not only dares to lock horns with Apple's iPad, but also moonlights as a smart home display. This is Google's first Android tablet in eight years, marking the tech giant's audacious attempt to breathe new life into the category.

So, buckle up as we embark on a journey into the realm of the Google Pixel Tablet, where we'll see if it’s managed to carve out its own niche.

Design and Display

The Pixel Tablet sports an 11-inch LCD screen with a dazzling 2560x1600 resolution. The 16:10 aspect ratio might feel a bit odd in portrait mode, but who said we're sticklers for tradition?

The tablet's sharp display is ideal for movies, photos, and the mandatory round of Angry Birds. It also features stereo speakers that promise to make your content sound as good as it looks, no matter how you hold the tablet. Just remember, it's not a chopping board, so keep it away from your kitchen knives.

Performance and Software

Armed with Google's Tensor G2 chip, the Pixel Tablet juggles multiple apps and games like a seasoned circus performer. With 8GB of RAM and storage options of 128GB or 256GB, you'll have ample room for your digital knick-knacks. Running on Android 13, the tablet offers enhanced multitasking capabilities, letting you run two apps side-by-side or use split-screen mode for peak productivity.

While some third-party apps might need a little persuasion to optimize for larger screens, Google's attempts to bridge the smartphone-tablet divide are laudable. Who needs tablet-specific apps when you can just supersize phone apps?

As a Smart Display

The Pixel Tablet's pièce de résistance is its magnetic charging speaker dock, which morphs the tablet into a smart display when idle. It's like a Jekyll and Hyde transformation that actually works.

Dock the tablet, and it becomes your personal home assistant, complete with time, weather updates, photo slideshows, and voice commands powered by Google Assistant. You can even cast to and from the Pixel, a feature that reminds us we're in 2023, and tablets are still playing catch-up.

Just remember to speak up when issuing commands. It's like having a voice-activated assistant who's a tad hard of hearing. Ah, the joys of technology!

Fingerprint Scanner, Audio and Camera

The Pixel Tablet comes with a nifty fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button, ensuring you're always one touch away from your digital escapades. It also boasts four speakers that deliver clear audio and noticeable stereo separation. However, it seems Google decided to play a game of hide and seek jack, forcing users to rely on Bluetooth or a USB-C dongle for private audio.

The Pixel Tablet features an 8-megapixel webcam for video calls and a rear camera for basic photography needs. The webcam performs well for one-on-one video calls but may struggle in larger group meetings. It's like having a shy performer who excels in solos but gets stage fright in ensemble pieces.

Battery Life and Sustainability

The Pixel Tablet offers a respectable battery life, clocking in around 12 hours of video playback. It might not outlast the Energizer bunny, but it'll power through a few binge-watching sessions before you need to hunt for the charger. Google also deserves a pat on the back for its eco-friendly approach.

The tablet is made with recycled materials, contributing significantly to its weight. And if you're worried about, Google and third-party shops are ready to play doctor. Just don't expect them to offer therapy for your tablet-home-hub relationship woes.

Verdict

With the Pixel Tablet, Google boldly ventures into the unknown, merging the utility of a tablet with the convenience of a smart display.

While it might not match the iPad in terms of app availability, the Pixel Tablet offers a unique experience for those seeking a communal device that effortlessly switches between active use and smart display mode. At £599, it's not the cheapest option, but who needs a savings account when you can have a tablet that doubles as a digital photo frame?

With its stunning screen, solid performance, and endearing identity crisis, the Pixel Tablet might just find its tribe, provided they're open to embracing Google's adventurous spirit.
