Huawei Mate 80? Rumors Suggest Entire Flagship Series to Feature 3D Face Unlock with Domestic Solution

Recent leaks from the tech world are pointing towards a significant security upgrade for an upcoming flagship smartphone. According to a post by digital blogger "Smart Pikachu," a certain annual flagship model is expected to feature 3D face recognition across its entire lineup. This move would mark a notable return for the technology, which will reportedly be based on a domestically developed solution. The last time Huawei featured 3D structured light technology was on the Mate 40 Pro, making this a highly anticipated comeback.

The discussion around this rumor quickly turned to Huawei. In the blogger's comment section, many speculated that the flagship in question is indeed from Huawei, a company with a history of using this advanced biometric feature. Previously, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Mate 30 Pro, and Mate 40 Pro all incorporated 3D structured light. Although the Mate 50 series featured a notch, it lacked 3D face unlock, a feature that was thankfully reinstated with the Mate 60 Pro and Pro+ models, signaling the company's renewed interest in top-tier facial recognition.

The most significant part of this rumor is the phrase "entire series." In the current Mate 60 lineup, only the Pro and Pro+ models are equipped with 3D face unlock. The standard Mate 60 model uses a single punch-hole camera and is limited to 2D facial recognition. If the upcoming annual flagship is the Mate 80 series, this leak suggests that even the standard Mate 80 could receive this major security enhancement, bringing payment-grade biometric security to all devices in the new family.

For context, 3D structured light technology offers a much higher level of security compared to standard 2D systems. It works by projecting tens of thousands of invisible infrared dots onto a user's face to create a precise 3D depth map. This detailed model is extremely difficult to spoof and provides reliable authentication even in low-light conditions. It is widely considered to be more secure than many fingerprint recognition systems, making it suitable for high-security applications like mobile payments.

While 3D face unlock is making a comeback, Huawei also appears to be advancing its fingerprint scanning technology. Previous reports from IT Home indicated that Huawei is actively testing a new single-point ultrasonic under-display fingerprint solution. This could be a welcome upgrade for users who find the positioning of the current optical under-display sensors on Huawei phones to be a bit too low for comfort. An ultrasonic sensor could potentially be placed in a more ergonomic position on the screen.
