Huawei Mate XT 2 Leak Shows a New G-Fold Design and an Outer Display
Huawei Mate XT 2 is starting to look a lot more practical than its predecessor.
A leaked video shared online on August 29 appears to show Huawei’s next tri-fold phone with an added outer display, a pill-shaped front camera cutout, and a new folding path that switches from the original Z-style layout to a G-fold design. If the clip is accurate, Huawei is not just refining the Mate XT formula. It is making the tri-fold concept easier to use as an everyday phone. 
Huawei has already confirmed that a new tri-fold device will appear at its September 7, 2026 launch event, alongside HarmonyOS 7 and other new products. But the company has not officially revealed the phone's final design yet, so the latest video should still be treated as a leak, not a finished product reveal.
What the leak shows
The most noticeable change is the new outer screen. On the original Mate XT, the folding design was the headline feature, but the leaked Mate XT 2 appears to add a more conventional cover display on the outside.
That matters because a tri-fold phone without a useful outer screen can feel more experimental than practical. A front display makes the device easier to check, reply to messages on, and use without unfolding it every time.
The leak also shows a pill-shaped front camera area, suggesting Huawei may be adjusting how it handles the front-facing camera and cover-screen layout.
A different folding path
The other major change is the folding mechanism itself. According to the video, the Mate XT 2 shifts from the earlier Z-shaped fold to a G-shaped fold.
That is more than a cosmetic tweak. A new folding path could affect how the phone closes, how the inner panels stack, and how the device feels in hand. It may also change the overall thickness balance and the way the screen layers are protected when the phone is folded.
Huawei’s rear camera module still looks familiar at first glance. The leak points to an octagonal camera island similar to the one on the previous model, which suggests Huawei is keeping part of its tri-fold design identity intact.
