Nintendo Switch 2 Lite leak points to 15% power cut

The rumored Nintendo Switch 2 Lite could adopt an upgraded semiconductor node to curb energy consumption by roughly 15%, giving portable-first players better efficiency in a smaller chassis. The key development hinges on Samsung's refined 8LPU+ process scheduled for a December 14 reveal, though the performance figures currently reflect foundry benchmarks rather than confirmed console hardware.

Nvidia T239 Architecture and Current Silicon Baseline

According to reporting from Nintendo Patents Watch, Nintendo is evaluating refined silicon for a future compact revision of its next-generation platform. The standard Switch 2 platform is anchored by Nvidia's custom T239 processor, fabricated on Samsung's standard 8nm production line. That base processor integrates eight Arm Cortex-A78C CPU cores alongside an Ampere-based GPU featuring 1,536 CUDA cores, occupying a die area of roughly 207 square millimeters.

Maintaining that footprint and thermal profile inside a trimmed-down, purely portable enclosure poses notable battery and cooling hurdles. If Nintendo follows its previous hardware roadmap by rolling out a dedicated Lite revision, moving to an optimized manufacturing node provides a practical way to lower operating temperatures and reduce draw on the battery pack.

Samsung 8LPU+ Node Delivers Measurable Thermal Relief

Samsung is slated to detail its upgraded 8LPU+ manufacturing technology on December 14 at the IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM). Technical previews indicate that compared to the baseline 8LPU process, the refined 8LPU+ standard achieves a 12% boost in overall performance and reduces power consumption by up to 15%.

These efficiency gains would offer direct benefits to handheld devices where internal volume is tightly constrained. Lower thermal output allows for lighter heatsinks and smaller fans, which in turn frees up space and reduces total weight. Nevertheless, the documented 15% reduction remains an attribute of Samsung's fabrication process itself rather than a finalized system metric, meaning verified specifications will depend on an official announcement from Nintendo.

If Nintendo brings a Switch 2 Lite to market with improved battery efficiency, would you prioritize a more compact, cooler-running handheld over the hybrid versatility and detachable controls of the standard console?
