Samsung Reportedly Preps 1 Million Galaxy Wide Fold Units to Counter Apple's iPhone Fold

According to a recent report from Korean media outlet EtNews, Samsung is making a significant move in the foldable smartphone market. The company is reportedly planning an initial production run of one million units for its new "Galaxy Wide Fold," a device designed to expand its foldable product lineup and compete directly with anticipated rivals.

Sources from the component industry suggest that this new device will feature a 7.6-inch OLED inner display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, complemented by a 5.4-inch external screen. The overall design will maintain the familiar "book-style" format seen in the existing Galaxy Z Fold series, opening and closing along a central vertical axis.

The planned production volume of one million units is a strong indicator of Samsung's confidence in this new form factor. This figure is notably higher than previous special edition foldables. For comparison, the lightweight Fold SE, launched in 2024, had a shipment volume of around 500,000 units, while the tri-folding Galaxy Z TriFold from last year saw a much smaller run of just 30,000 units.

Samsung's annual shipments for its mainline foldable updates typically hover around five million units, with last year's Fold 7 exceeding six million due to strong sales. By introducing the "Wide Fold" to its lineup, the company aims to further increase its total foldable phone shipments for the year, diversifying its offerings to attract more consumers.

This strategic move appears to be timed to counter a major new competitor. Apple is widely expected to release its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Fold, this fall. Reports suggest that Apple's device will also feature a 4:3 aspect ratio for its inner screen, placing it in direct competition with Samsung's new offering.

With industry estimates projecting iPhone Fold shipments to reach as high as 10 million units, the stage is set for a monumental clash in the foldable market. The second half of the year will likely witness a head-to-head battle between the two tech giants as they vie for dominance in this innovative and growing segment of the smartphone industry.
