Sony Revives Its Classic Kit Lens: Introducing the FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS II

In a surprise move during the launch of its new Alpha 7 V full-frame mirrorless camera, Sony unveiled an update to one of its most foundational lenses. While many enthusiasts were eagerly awaiting new G Master flagships, Sony quietly released the FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS II, a modern successor to its long-standing kit lens.

This new lens replaces the original FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS, which debuted in 2014 with the very first Alpha 7 camera. For nearly 12 years, this versatile zoom has been the unassuming workhorse for countless photographers entering the Sony Alpha system, serving as the primary kit lens for the Alpha 7 II, III, and IV. It provided a useful wide-to-telephoto range aimed at attracting new users to the platform.

The Mark II version brings this classic design into the modern era with several crucial enhancements. Compared to its predecessor, the lens offers improved autofocus precision. For videographers, it now supports focus breathing compensation. A significant upgrade is its ability to perform coordinated image stabilization, where the lens's Optical SteadyShot (OSS) works in conjunction with a compatible camera's in-body stabilization to deliver even better anti-shake performance.

To keep pace with Sony's latest high-speed cameras, the FE 28-70mm II is fully compatible with the Alpha 7 V's 30 fps continuous shooting and can even support the Alpha 9 III's incredible 120 fps continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking. While most core specifications remain the same, Sony has managed to make it slightly lighter, reducing its weight by 2 grams to 293g. The physical dimensions are unchanged, and it includes an ALC-SH132 petal-style lens hood.
