Tesla HW 4.0 Approved in Europe for New Model S and X

Tesla HW 4.0 Approved in Europe for New Model S and X

Tesla received a change approval certificate from the Dutch Automotive Authority on February 12. The certificate confirms that the company is equipping the Model S and Model X with Hardware 4.0 chips, enabling the latest FSD software and hardware to be offered for these models in Europe.

The document not only presents HW 4.0 but also outlines various modifications that Tesla intends to make to the new vehicle. These include updates to a new navigation and positioning system antenna, as well as changes to the Gen3 inverter, automatic headlight functionality, Model X interior mirror bracket, motor code, tail badge, top speed, and various other aspects.

As per the document, the latest Model S comes with a maximum speed setting of 174 MPH (280km/h), which can be raised to 200 MPH (322km/h) by the owners by opting for the carbon-ceramic brake kit. This suggests that Tesla might introduce optional carbon ceramic brake support for its customers soon.

Although the certificate doesn't provide any information regarding Tesla Hardware 4.0, it's been verified that Hardware 4.0 will also be utilized in the upcoming Cybertruck. Therefore, it can be inferred that the new platform is coming soon and additional updates are in the pipeline.

Hardware 4.0 is predicted to utilize TSMC's 4/5nm process and offer a 5MP camera, which will enhance Autopilot's ability to detect distant objects based on earlier disclosures and prognostications. Additionally, the updated hardware will contain a new FSD computer that is anticipated to have four times the power of the present HW3.0 FSD computer.

Furthermore, the upcoming HW4.0 is anticipated to feature an advanced high-definition radar that will greatly enhance the functionality of the FSD. Moreover, Tesla has also disclosed that the GNSS antenna for GPS will be upgraded, which will additionally enable compatibility with other satellite navigation systems, including GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo.

Model Y and Model 3

It comes as no surprise that Tesla has chosen to debut hardware 4.0 on the Model S and Model X models initially. These vehicles have lower production rates, which allows for a gradual introduction of the changes. The company may be constrained by limited parts or could be aiming to minimize the costs of potential recalls related to the new hardware. While the Cybertruck is set to feature hardware 4.0, it leaves the Model Y and Model 3 without it. Nonetheless, it's likely that Tesla will prioritize updating these models as quickly as possible. Once news spreads that the Model S and Model X vehicles come equipped with hardware 4.0, potential buyers of the Model 3 and Model Y may prefer to wait before placing an order or receiving delivery.
