Supermicro Unveils Its First AMD SuperO Motherboard: The Unconventional CARAM5-M

Supermicro, a brand renowned for its server-grade hardware, is making a significant move in the consumer space. Its SuperO gaming motherboard line, which has historically been exclusive to Intel platforms, is now welcoming AMD for the first time with the introduction of the CARAM5-M.

The most striking aspect of the CARAM5-M is its highly unconventional layout. Built on a standard M-ATX form factor, the motherboard features a CPU socket rotated 90 degrees. This unique orientation shifts the two DDR5 UDIMM memory slots to the top edge of the board. Adding to the unusual design, the main 24-pin power connector is located at the bottom right, a departure from the typical placement.

The Unconventional CARAM5-M

The CARAM5-M is built around AMD's AM5 socket and utilizes the B850 chipset. Intriguingly, despite being labeled as a B850 board, it comes equipped with USB4 ports—a feature typically reserved for the higher-tier X870 chipset. This positions the board as a unique offering in the market, blending mid-range affordability with high-end connectivity.

Designed to handle processors with a TDP of up to 170W, the CARAM5-M is ready for powerful builds. It provides two PCIe slots, two M.2 slots for high-speed NVMe storage, and features robust networking with 5GbE wired LAN and Wi-Fi 7 support. The complete specifications are as follows:
