Olight Baton Ultra

I have been using the Olight Baton Ultra for a few weeks now to see how it handles daily use. At $99.99, it enters a highly competitive space for everyday carry flashlights but the construction and the overall feel of it is on another level. Olight has introduced a few major physical upgrades here, but there are also some specific trade-offs that I’ll mention below.

Honestly, the unboxing experience was pleasant as the box itself is made of high-quality materials, resembling the grain of leather. The flashlight is packed tightly in its place and when you lift the cover, you will find the user’s manual, magnetic charging pad and an L-shaped mounting plate. I like it when companies pay attention to packaging and here, I can say that I like it, but I also think about the carbon footprint and wonder if they are going to go for a cleaner approach. I know that this may be a dual-blade knife, but it is worth mentioning.

Superb build quality

Starting with the build quality, the moment you pick up the Baton Ultra, you begin to understand the price point. Olight chose to build the chassis out of their O-Aluminum alloy - OAL. In hand, the material has a dense, rigid quality that feels vastly superior to standard aluminum bodies, and it feel matte to the touch. The machining (CNC, I suppose) is exceptionally clean, featuring a distinct texturing that provides a phenomenal grip without feeling abrasive against bare skin or wearing out your pocket lining too quickly. OLIGHT BATON ULTRA FLASH LIGHT

The flashlight came in a beautiful light green box - very cool. The flashlight comes with detailed manual in all languages, a clip for clothes, backpack or cap visor, a magnetic tail that allows you attach the flashlight to metal surfaces for hands-free use, and a magnetic charging cable with a charging indicator. The kit also includes a custom lithium-ion ***** battery with a capacity of 3500 mAh. The flashlight is quite comfortable in your hand, it has an anti-slip pattern on the casing, which ensures a secure hold of the device in your hand; you can feel the quality of the product.

The flashlight has 5 brightness levels including Turbo, High, Medium, Low and Moonlight, and it is also possible to charge the device via the MCC magnetic charging port on the back of the device or using a USB-C cable that is hidden in the magnetic charging niche, that also holds an additional power button.

IPX8 waterproof class allows the flashlight be used underwater at the depth of up to 2 meters, and it is also resistant to falls from a height of up to 2 meters, without loss of functionality.

Overall, I really like the flashlight, it's easy to use, interesting and very compact. The cons include that in the Turbo mode the flashlight can get very hot and the clip is not very convenient because it protrudes beyond the flashlight and can damage clothes if you do not pull it off when attaching.

- Packaging and first impression

The packaging of the flashlight itself makes a very good impression. It feels solid, premium and immediately gives the impression of a high-quality product. The black finish and the slightly embossed image of the Baton Ultra already look very nice. The flashlight is already pre-assembled, so it can be used directly. Overall, everything feels well thought out and presented in a premium way.

- Design, build quality and material

The Baton Ultra feels very good in the hand. It is compact, relatively light and sits securely in the hand. To me, it clearly has the character of a small EDC flashlight: not too big, not too heavy, but still serious enough not to feel like a toy.

The OAL material is especially interesting. It feels metallic, but not cold, and the smooth areas have a pleasantly soft, almost velvety feel. At the same time, the textured areas provide good grip, so the flashlight is easy and secure to hold. I can confirm that OAL is very scratch-resistant, as I also own other Olight flashlights made from OAL. That is what makes this material special to me:

premium and elegant in the hand, but still robust enough for everyday use.

Design

The Olight Baton Ultra flashlight features a grooved aluminum body for enhanced grip. This aluminum is a patented alloy by Olight, offering greater durability against drops and scratches.

There’s a switch on the side and another on the back where it charges magnetically. Also on the side is a clip for attaching the flashlight to clothing, backpacks, etc.

An LED is mounted on the top of the flashlight, using a custom-designed EIP1 module that provides greater brightness than other Olight flashlights.

The battery can be removed by unscrewing the head.

Unscrewing the back reveals the USB-C port.
